Acupuncture and Pregnancy
During pregnancy most people prefer to avoid pharmaceutical drugs such as painkillers.
Acupuncture has a lot to offer during pregnancy and a properly trained acupuncturist can safely help with most problems which can happen during pregnancy. Whether the problem started before pregnancy or it occured after becoming pregnant, acupuncture may be the solution with minimal or no side effect..
Costochondritis is an inflamation of the costochondral or costosternal joint which causes pain and tenderness. Although it was helpful to have the diagnostic done by the GP, the most important observation here from an acupuncturist point of view was that the GB channel was affected. Activating the channel was therefore likely to cause quasi immediat relief.
The points prescription not only relieved the burning pain but also helped with the morning sickness and breathlessness.

Costochondritis - Pregnant Female 37
Case History
Mrs R. was 8 weeks pregnant when she came for a consultation (October 2009). One month ago, while she was going to Wales she noticed a stabbing pain in her chest mostly on the left hand side. At first she feared that it could be an heart attack and she was rushed into the local hospital. However, it appeared that she has been suffering from costochondritis. Eventually her GP explained to her that there was no more viral infection but the last few days she started to feel more burning pain and, after discussion with her GP, she decided not to use any painkiller. When she came to the clinic, her main concern was the burning pain which prevented her from sleeping at night. She also experienced breatlessness and morning sickness 70% of the time. Moreover she had pain and distension in her left lateral costal region.
Prescription
Palpation uncovered that there was a tender point at GB 24 on the chest on the left hand side. I explained to Mrs R the link between all the symptoms she described. P6 Ren 17 and Ren 14 where used to unbind the chest, help breathing and alleviate morning sickness. GB 40 was used for the pain in the lateral costal region, supplemented with GB24 on the left hand side only. LI 11 was added to clear the burning sensation.
Treatment Frequency
The first treatment was followed by another one three days later.
Outcome
When Mrs R came for the second treatment three days latter she said that the pain had gone and she had been free from morning sickness and breathlessness for two days. Morning sickness was just coming back as well as the feeling of breathlessness.
GB 24 was therefore removed from the prescription and replaced by moxa on ST 36 to give her more energy.
Three days later she called and was free from the symptoms. She was going on holidays
