Acupuncture and Cystitis

Cystitis plagues the life of most women, about half of the female population of Britain suffer from it at least once in their life.

Most women will experience UTI (urinary tract infection) which causes an inflamation of the bladder.

Usually this will be treated with antibiotics however, some people prefer to reduce their consumption of antibiotics for health reasons.

In my clinical practice I have noticed that acupuncture can clear cystitis in three to five days, the reduction in pain, burning and discomfort is manifest from day one and the dietary advice helps stop the recurrence.

Cystitis - Female 49

Case History

Mrs P. had been suffering for two days with cystitis . Passing water would produce a burning and very uncomfortable sensation. This has not happened to her for years and she was reluctant to use antibiotics unless it were necessary.

Prescription

Local and systemic points were used to treat the patient.

Local points are acupuncture points around the area to be treated. Systemic points are points which affect the whole body. The main local point used was Ren 1. The systemic points used where ST 36, SP 6 and LI 11.

Treatment Frequency

One treatment a day for three days then one treatment a week for 2 weeks. The patient also received some dietary advice to follow for one week to help with preventing cystitis to come back. One of the important dietary advice was to be weary with cranberry juice from supermarkets and carefully check the inredients before buying it . Although many people recommend cranberry juice, it is common to find additives such as aspartame in the cranberry juice. I tell patients to drink plenty of water instead of a drink which contains ingredients that they cannot trust.

Outcome

After the first treatment, the patient reported a noticeable reduction in pain and discomfort. There was no more pain left afer the 3rd treatment. A follow up was made two months later. The cystitis had not come back.
